Trauma Therapy

Let’s do this together

Hi, we’re so glad you’re here.

Are you feeling triggered on a daily basis and just want that to go away? Do you want to understand your body better and discover how you may be holding trauma in your body? I know exactly how It feels to be uncomfortable with where you are now because it feels like you can't control your reactions to your environment. I want to help you understand all of this and give you a safe place to process it all. Individual therapy, also known as counseling or psychotherapy, involves a confidential and collaborative process between a therapist and a client to address personal concerns, emotional difficulties, or behavioral issues. As empathetic and culturally aware counselors with intersecting identities, we are committed to providing a safe and supportive space in sessions. We are deeply committed to serving clients from an array of populations and intersecting identities. We offer both talk therapy and EMDR for individual psychotherapy clients.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a simple but efficient therapy using bilateral stimulation (BLS) ─ tapping, auditory tones or eye movements ─ to accelerate the brain's capacity to process and heal a troubling memory. BLS, which occurs naturally during dream sleep, causes the two brain parts to work together to reintegrate the memory. Some clients experience relief or positive effects in just a few sessions. EMDR is effective in alleviating trauma-related symptoms, whether the traumatic event occurred many years ago or yesterday. It gives desired results –with little talking, without using drugs, and requires no “homework” between sessions.

What is EMDR?

What does EMDR treat?

  • PTSD: EMDR is often recommended as a first-line treatment for PTSD. It helps individuals process traumatic memories and reduce associated distress, intrusive thoughts, and avoidance behaviors.

  • Anxiety Disorders: EMDR therapy has shown efficacy in treating various anxiety disorders, such as panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder.

  • Depression: Some individuals with depression who have experienced trauma or adverse life events may benefit from EMDR therapy, particularly when traditional treatments alone are not fully effective.

  • Phobias: EMDR can be helpful in treating specific phobias by targeting underlying traumatic experiences or distressing memories associated with the phobia.

  • Addiction: EMDR therapy may be incorporated into addiction treatment programs to address underlying trauma contributing to substance abuse or addictive behaviors.

  • Dissociative Disorders: EMDR can aid individuals with dissociative disorders, such as dissociative identity disorder (DID), in processing traumatic memories.

  • Stress-Related Disorders: EMDR therapy can be beneficial for individuals experiencing stress-related disorders, including adjustment disorders and acute stress disorder.

  • Performance Enhancement: Some individuals seek EMDR therapy to address performance anxiety or to enhance their performance in various areas, such as academics, sports, or public speaking.

We’re passionate about EMDR therapy because we have witnessed its transformative effects on our clients' lives. Seeing individuals who have struggled with traditional therapy and medications find relief and progress through EMDR has ignited our passion for this therapeutic approach. We’re am deeply invested in helping my clients overcome obstacles and reduce distress levels, and we believe in the efficacy of EMDR to achieve these goals.

  • The potential benefits of EMDR include:

    • Reduction in distress

    • Improved self-esteem

    • Alleviation of PTSD symptoms

    • Reduced anxiety and depression

    • Improved physical health

    • Improved focus and concentration

    • Improved sleep quality

EMDR aids in guiding the brain to reintegrate the memory and relocate it to a more suitable area within the brain. It's the client's own brain that undertakes this process of memory reintegration and subsequent healing.

  • Reprocessing a memory may bring up associated memories. The is normal and those memories will also be reprocessed.

During the EMDR, the client may experience physical sensations and retrieve images, emotions, and sounds associated with the memory.

Reprocessing of the memory normally continues after the end of the formal therapy session.

Other memories, flashbacks, feelings, and sensations may occur. The client may have dreams associated with the memory. Frequently the brain is able to process these additional memories without help, but arrangements for assistance will be made in a timely manner if the client is unable to cope.

  • The distinction between an EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) trained clinician and an EMDR-certified clinician pertains to their level of expertise and familiarity with the EMDR therapy approach:

EMDR Trained Clinician: Has completed foundational training in EMDR therapy and can incorporate EMDR techniques into their practice. They may still be relatively new to using EMDR in clinical settings and may require further experience and supervision to become proficient.

EMDR Certified Clinician: Has completed foundational training in EMDR therapy and fulfilled additional requirements to obtain certification. This includes conducting a specified number of supervised sessions, engaging in ongoing consultation and supervision, and demonstrating proficiency in applying EMDR techniques competently and ethically. Certification signifies a higher level of expertise and experience in utilizing EMDR therapy.

  • EMDR has been widely researched and has garnered empirical support for its effectiveness in treating PTSD and trauma-related symptoms. It is considered a recommended treatment for PTSD by organizations such as the American Psychological Association (APA) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

  • Virtual EMDR is just as effective as in-person EMDR sessions. The efficacy trial by Jennifer Hecker DuVal and colleagues, as well as those by Sbarra & Wheaton, McGowen et al., and Dyer, de Young & Porges, suggest that virtual EMDR therapy is just as effective as its in-person counterpart. These studies consistently demonstrate significant reductions in symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with virtual EMDR therapy, with outcomes comparable to those of in-person EMDR therapy.
